Highland cows are not fussy eaters. They come from some of the poorest grazing land in Scotland, and they are famous for doing well on food other cattle would turn down.
Highland cows eat mainly grass and, when grass is short, hay. They are also strong foragers that will eat rough plants other cattle ignore. Baby Highlands drink milk, from their mother or a bottle, before moving on to solid food.
Grass And Hay
Like all cattle, Highlands are ruminants, so their stomachs are built for grass. Pasture is the main meal for most of the year, and hay fills the gap when the grass runs short.
The Rough Stuff
This is where Highlands stand out. The breed is known for converting poor grazing efficiently and thriving where less hardy cattle struggle. They will eat rough plants other cattle pass over, which is why some conservation groups use them to manage overgrown land.
What Do Baby Highlands Eat?
Calves start on milk, and on a farm some drink from a bottle. That is what you see at our VIP bottle feeding: our mini Highland calves were born this fall and still love the bottle. Calves start nibbling grass and other solid food as they grow. Read more in Baby Highland Cow Facts.
What Treats Do Highland Cows Like?
Owners often give small amounts of treats, but a cow's main diet should stay grass and hay. If you own cattle, ask your vet what is safe, since some plants and foods can harm them and large pieces can be a choking risk.
At a farm, the rule is simple: only feed what the staff give you. Please do not bring your own snacks for the herd. At Mini Moo Land, your visit includes hand-feeding, so you do not need to bring anything.
Feeding A Highland: How To Do It
- Keep your hand flat and let the cow come to you.
- Expect a long tongue. It is wet and a little rough, and most kids find it hilarious.
- Stay clear of the horns and keep your face back.
- Wash your hands afterward.
