Cows
Everything you wanted to know about mini Highland cows, from how big they get to why they are so gentle. Then come meet our herd at Mini Moo Land in Kissimmee.
What Is A Mini Highland Cow?
Highland cattle come from the rugged Highlands of Scotland. They are famous for their long, shaggy coats, sweeping horns and the fringe of hair that falls over their eyes. A mini Highland cow is simply a smaller Highland, bred down in size while keeping the same fluffy look and easygoing personality.
How big do mini Highland cows get?
There is no single official standard, but breeders usually call a Highland "mini" when it stands under about 42 inches at the hip as an adult. That is small enough that many kids can look one right in the eye. Standard Highlands are taller and can weigh well over 1,000 pounds, while minis are often around half that.
That famous coat
Highlands grow a double coat: long, wavy outer hair that sheds rain, over a soft, downy undercoat. Colors include red, black, yellow, dun, white, silver and brindle. Both cows and bulls grow horns.
Are mini Highland cows friendly?
Highlands are known for being calm and gentle, which is why people fall for them. They are still cattle with horns, though, so at Mini Moo Land our team guides every interaction to keep guests and cows comfortable.
Shaggy Cows In The Florida Sun?
A cold-weather coat in Kissimmee sounds like a bad match, but Highlands shed much of their heavy coat in the warm months. Shade, fresh water and a breeze matter most. Our herd of mini Highland cows spends the day under big live oaks and a covered barn area.
